AB  - The questions raised by O'Keefe et al. challenge us to think clearly about the intent of incarceration generally and the objective of administrative segregation in particular. Our comments address several points: the study's methodology, the context of administrative segregation, several attendant pragmatic concerns linked to its practice, and the challenges of understanding the needs and motivations of individual offenders.
