2022, Journal of Clinical EpidemiologyCitation Excerpt :Provider and decision maker acceptability in the decision context also weighs into the ability of an economic evaluation to remain useful in another context—gathering of such information may rely largely on information gathered from outside of the economic evaluation itself through panel members, literature queries, or external stakeholder consultation. It has long been understood that healthcare providers carry inherent and variable assumptions of disease and values they place on alternative interventions [80]. As well, willingness-to-pay thresholds would need to be comparable as an intervention may be cost-effective in one setting and not in another solely based on the differences in the decision maker threshold [39,57].
Use of electroconvulsive therapy for individuals receiving inpatient psychiatric care on a nationwide scale in France: Variations linked to health care supply
2022, Brain StimulationCitation Excerpt :Several explanatory hypotheses can be drawn from the literature on unwarranted medical practice variations, which represent the gap between practice and evidence-based medicine. One of these hypotheses is the difference in preferences or habits of health care providers, in particular in a context of uncertainty [12]. For ECT, this can notably be linked to the high efficacy of the procedure, as opposed to the negative representations among some health professionals [13,14], which is in line with the common depictions in the general population [15–17], and to the continuum of clinical manifestations of mental disorders, which can make it difficult to determine the ideal timing of the procedure among a sequence of alternatives [18].
