  • Online networks of racial hate: A systematic review of 10 years of research on cyber-racism

    2018, Computers in Human Behavior
    Citation Excerpt :

Research shows that these individuals use online channels to validate their beliefs and achieve a sense of belonging to (virtual) communities of like-minded supporters of racism. This is a worrying trend, as there are now several examples of offline violent action perpetrated by isolated individuals who radicalise into white supremacist movements, as in the cases in Norway (Wessely, 2012) and in Canada (Narayan, 2017). In conclusion, the review highlights the need for further research into understanding the impact of belonging to ‘online communities of hate’ on isolated individuals (e.g., research on how a sense of belonging to an online community of like-minded individuals affects their commitment to engage in action that is aligned with the cause of these racist groups is needed).
